( Details ) ISBN: 0888995199 Published: August 2002 | Published by Groundwood From the Publisher Sequel to The Breadwinner -- Royalties to Women for Women in Afghanistan This eagerly anticipated novel tells the story of Parvana's quest to find her family. The Taliban still controls Afghanistan, but Kabul is in ruins, Parvana's father has died, and her mother, sister and brother could be anywhere in the country. Parvana is thirteen now, but she sets out alone, masquerading as a boy. In her search for shelter and food as she makes her way across the desolate Afghan countryside, she meets other children who are strays from the war. Their journey becomes even more perilous when war breaks out, though they don't know why the bombs are falling. It takes resilience, imagination and luck -- and the family bond the children forge with each other -- to help them survive. Ages 10-14. About the Author Deborah Ellis works as a counselor in a group home in Toronto. Her first children's book, Looking for X, won the Governor General's Award for Children's Literature. A few years ago Deborah traveled to Afghan refugee camps in Afghanistan to interview women for her book of oral histories, The Women of the Afghan War. The stories she heard and the children she met in those camps were also the inspiration for her books about Parvana. Reader Reviews Average Reader Review: Number of Reviews: 1 1. Innocence is Lost Reviewer: Liz Watson from Burlington, ON (lwatson7@cogeco.ca) Date: 12/31/2002 4:39:55 PM This book by Deb Ellis is truly one of best in today's children's literature. Children and adults will learn the truth about the harshness and the struggles of the women and children of Afghanistan. The story comes alive and makes you feel that you are indeed an integral part of Parvana's life and of her search. As a retired teacher of young children, as a presenter on the situation of Afghan women and children and as a fundraiser for Afghan Women, I can tell you that this story tells it all. Of all the internet research that I have done, Deb Ellis artistically weaves so many factual truths into a rich tapestry of reality such that one need not search the internet. It is all there. A very readable and heart wrenching story.
